Hiring, wages, and managers

Build, then Staff, opens wage talks in Operations, then Staff, before you place someone. The pulled-up applicant stays if you switch roles or close the panel. Try another flips to the next resume. Previous goes back through today's pile. At the end of the pile you can review earlier resumes. Three rejected wage offers send that person packing.

Daily wages below are the base rates in data/wages.json. The HUD shows them in your currency. The default currency is US dollars.

Daily wages

  • Janitor 60. Always union. Cleans and fights small fires.
  • Maintenance 75. Always union. Installs painted floors, walls, doors, and roads, and repairs worn gear.
  • Clerk 80 base. Union fair is 92 (1.15). Contractor fair is 56 (0.70).
  • Carrier 90 base. Union fair is 103.5. Contractor fair is 63.
  • Clerk Manager 140. Salaried.
  • Carrier Manager 150. Salaried.
  • Facilities Manager 130. Salaried. This is the maintenance manager.
  • Postmaster 220. Salaried.
  • Facility Inspector 150. Not hireable. Called in for bomb-threat evacuations, detonations, mail bombs, seized explosives or weapons, and missed drugs, weapons, or undeclared currency.
  • Firefighter and bomb squad are call-ins at 0. They are not a hire.

Only clerks and carriers can be contractors. Everyone else on the hire list is union or salaried. Union hire offers sit between 85 percent and 130 percent of that fair rate. Contractor offers sit between 80 percent and 115 percent. Paying under fair on a union or contractor hire hurts Labor Relations. A salaried accepted wage does not.

Salaried staff are paid every day, including days off. Hourly staff are paid on days they are scheduled to work. Traits, smokers, and the five-member election are on Staff and traits.

Managers

Build, then Staff, then Hire Manager opens Clerk Manager, Carrier Manager, or Facilities Manager. Clerk and carrier managers supervise their craft and boost nearby staff. They do not handle mail. The Facilities Manager boosts nearby janitors and maintenance and does not handle mail. Set hours in Operations, then Staff, after the hire.

The postmaster does not handle mail. Deal progress ticks only while a postmaster is on duty, and only after the Postmaster office is finished. The postmaster's days off are fixed to Saturday and Sunday. See Deals and contracts.

Elected union bosses are not a hire. They stay clerks or carriers. See Unions.

Shifts

One Hire Clerk button covers every clerk shift. In Operations, then Staff:

  • Day, 08:00 to 17:00.
  • Early, 04:00 to 12:30 (early trucks and box mail).
  • Evening, 12:00 to 20:00 (keys and outgoing).
  • Night, 20:00 to 05:00 (distribution center overnight sort).
  • Split, 04:00 to 12:00 and 16:00 to 20:00, contractor floor staff only.

Union clerks use continuous shifts only. Carriers are Day only (08:00 to 17:00). They never come in Early. Heavy street volume can keep them on overtime until 20:00, 21:00, or 22:00. Station plants should clear mail the same day with Early, Day, and Evening. Overnight sorting is for a distribution center.

The overtime button recalls classes who left or have a day off. Authorized classes cost 1.5 times the hourly wage for those hours. It clears at midnight. It is blocked during a holiday shutdown. See Holidays.
